U.S. Embassy Freetown

06/16/06

Attention all American citizens:

The U.S. Embassy in Freetown has received reports indicating that a group named Wounded in Action (WIA) may conduct demonstrations today or Monday, June 19.  The location of these demonstrations is not known, however, previous demonstrations have taken place near the Wilberforce Barracks and the Ministry of Defense.  In addition, the Special Court for Sierra Leone is a possible site for the demonstrations.

We wish to remind American citizens that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and possibly escalate into violence. American citizens are therefore urged to avoid the areas of demonstrations if possible, and to exercise caution if within the vicinity of any demonstrations. Continue to maintain a sense of your surroundings, and report any irregular behavior to the U.S. Embassy.

U.S. citizens in Sierra Leone are strongly encouraged to register with the Department of State at https://travelregistration.state.gov.  Anyone without Internet access may register in person at the U.S. Embassy in Freetown and obtain information there on travel and security in Sierra Leone.

The U.S. Embassy is located at the corners of Siaka Stevens and Walpole Streets in Freetown.  Telephone numbers for American citizens emergencies are 226-481 and, after hours, 227-998.  Our web site is http://freetown.usembassy.gov.
