VIP Luncheon aboard US Navy Ship Bradley (18 Dec 08)

Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for joining us here today.  This ship was named for Navy Lieutenant Robert Graham Bradley, who served on board the USS Princeton in the Pacific Theatre during World War II.  When the Princeton was attacked, Lieutenant Bradley led the effort to control the fires until intense heat forced him to fall back.  After ensuring that no wounded men had been left behind, Bradley followed his men into the water and was picked up by another ship.

A few hours later, Bradley rejoined the Princeton and the efforts to save her, but the flames touched off a mass explosion of ammunition, killing Bradley and his men instantly.  For his efforts, Bradley was posthumously awarded the Navy Cross for valor.

I think it is fitting that the ship has now embarked on a mission that provides its sailors with the opportunity to give of their time and their effort the way Lieutenant Bradley gave of himself.  The members of the Bradley's crew have demonstrated great devotion to the cause of humanitarianism and the cause of freedom through their work here.  The training and consultations they have provided to the RSLAF will make a positive impact on the national security of this country, and the safety of Sierra Leoneans.  Their work at the SOS Children's Center, which we will visit later this afternoon, provided a new environment for children who will be empowered to shape the future of this country.

I want to extend my sincere thanks to Commander Clint Caroll and his crew for their commitment to service and for the impact their visit has made on the bilateral relationship between the United States and Sierra Leone and the lasting contribution they have made to Sierra Leone's development.  I am confident that this will be the first of many such visits that will enhance our cooperation and build mutual respect.

Thank you.
