Visit to Sierra Leone of Theresa Marie Whelan, U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs

Ms. Theresa Marie Whelan, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs will visit Sierra Leone from October 15-16.   Ms. Whelan will visit the RSLAF, the Ministry of Defense, IMATT, the PA&E Logistics Training Center and UNAMSIL.  Ms. Whelan will also review the RSLAF's training branch and their HIV/AIDS programs.

Ms. Whelan currently serves as the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for African Affairs within the Office of the Secretary of Defense.  Her office is responsible for Department of Defense policy for all of Sub-Saharan Africa.  Ms Whelan brings to her position fifteen years of experience in the defense intelligence and defense policy communities, including twelve years focusing on African issues.
