The United States congratulates the people of Sierra Leone on the successful presidential and parliamentary elections held on August 11, with results certified on August 25th.  We commend the independent National Electoral Commission and the Sierra Leone Police as well as the Sierra Leonean people, who voted in record numbers.

We urge Sierra Leoneans to respect the results of the elections.  We anticipate the September 8 presidential run-off election will be equally democratic and peaceful and call on the Government of Sierra Leone and all political parties to continue to follow the constitutional process.  We fully expect the run-off elections will be conducted in a transparent and fair manner – free from violence and intimidation – that reflects the will of the Sierra Leonean people.
