There was a line of trucks in Bo Waterside, Liberia on July 13 as the US Government-funded ECOWAS Depot in Freetown handed over 18 double-cabin pick-up trucks to the Liberian National Electoral Commission (NEC). ECOWAS requested Freetown Depot assistance for the Liberian Electoral Commission.
The Electoral Commission requested the vehicles to aid in running credible, free and transparent elections. The 18 vehicles are on loan from the Freetown Depot to the Liberian NEC to help in conducting the up coming Liberia Presidential and Legislative elections, scheduled for October 11, 2005. The Commission wants sound elections to help put Liberia on the path to durable peace.
With the support of staff of the U.S. Company Pacific Architects and Engineers (PAE), which operates the Freetown Depot, 18 Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF) drivers and three mechanics drove the vehicles from Freetown to Liberia for the handing over. The RSLAF drivers and mechanics were commended for their professionalism in accomplishing the transfer of the vehicles.
