The United States of America will celebrate its 228th Independence on July 4th 2004. In Sierra Leone, this year’s American Independence day will be low key and will be observed on July 2nd with a small ceremony being held at the Embassy’s Auditorium. The major celebrations will be held next February during President’s Day, commemorating the birthdays of the 1st President of the United States of America, General George Washington, and of the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. This is in keeping with many other U.S. Missions in the tropics where heavy rains in July prevent the holding of traditional outdoor 4th of July celebrations at that time of year, so the event is shifted to February.
