On February 4, 2008, the United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone, June Carter Perry opened a Seminar on Defense Resource Management at the Solar Hotel. The seminar, which runs from February 4 – 15 will emphasize the need for effective and responsible resource management in the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces.
At the opening ceremony, Ambassador Perry told the forty participants they were entrusted with the nation’s most valuable resources -- people, land, and money -- and should do everything in their power to care for those resources. She stressed that all nations must work to maximize the effectiveness of finite resources.
The seminar included budget, financial and audit personnel from the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Fisheries, Office of National Security, National Police, Customs, and Prisons. All participants have responsibility for budget and financial allocation programs critical to the Government of Sierra Leone.
The Defense Resource Management Institute, in Monterrey, California, which is running the seminar, has a long history of teaching courses in Sierra Leone on Defense Resource Management.
