We, the undersigned diplomatic missions accredited in Sierra Leone, welcome the activation of the Political Parties Registration Commission in accordance with the 1991 National Constitution of Sierra Leone and the 2002 Political Parties Act.

We look forward to the Commission carrying out its mandate in a manner that allows Sierra Leone’s citizens to express their political will and aspirations through the creation of legitimate political parties, which will broaden the transparency and legitimacy of Sierra Leone’s developing democracy.

Further, we hope Sierra Leone’s political parties – both newly registered and established – will take advantage of this opportunity to educate and inform the electorate by generating a genuine and vigorous issues-based national debate as they approach the 2007 presidential and parliamentary elections.  Such debate is a critical component of Sierra Leone’s successful emergence from its turbulent past.
