Political Affairs Section

The Political Affairs Section is responsible for regular and ad hoc reporting on and analysis of Sierra Leone's domestic political affairs and foreign relations.  The section maintains contact with Sierra Leonean government officials to further U.S. foreign policy interests and increase bilateral dialogue.  It also collaborates with non-governmental organizations (NGOs), local civil society organizations (CSOs), the United Nations Integrated Peace building Office in Sierra Leone (UNIPSIL), and other diplomatic missions and UN agencies in Freetown on international donor community initiatives.

This year promises to be an exciting one in Sierra Leone politics as the Presidential and Parliamentary campaigns kick into high gear. The elections are currently scheduled for November 17, 2012, and both the government and the international community are working hard to ensure that the entire process will be peaceful, clean, and transparent. The section will also continue to focus on critical issues of good governance, particularly the country’s efforts to combat official corruption, as well as improving the government’s ability to deliver public services.  And, as always, the section will continue to be a strong advocate on human rights issues, such as eliminating trafficking in persons (TIP) and the worst forms of child labor, promoting women’s economic empowerment and political participation, and protecting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgendered (LGBT) Sierra Leoneans.
