In continuation of the support given to the Fourah Bay College (FBC) Library through the American Shelf Program, the IRC Director today presented over 100 titles to the Chief Librarian at the FBC Library, Mr. Oliver Harding.  The books valued at over $5000 covered various subject areas including the Arts, Sciences, Education, Conflict and Peace Studies, Law and Technology.

The American Shelf program at FBC was initiated in 2007 and the FBC library has benefitted from several donations since.  The IRC also donates copies of periodicals and magazines monthly to the Library

On November 21, United States Ambassador to Sierra Leone June Carter Perry launched the American Shelf program at the Fourah Bay College Library.  Also in attendance were the Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Jonas Redwood-Sawyerr, the Head Librarian Mr. Oliver Harding, and many members of the student body and faculty of the College.

The American Shelf program allows the United States Embassy to provide books and periodicals, both fiction and nonfiction to the University Library for use by students and faculty.  The Shelf at FBC is the second American Shelf in Sierra Leone, the first being at the Kissy Library.  The Shelf is the beginning of a partnership between the Embassy and FBC which will include future supplemental book donations as well as many cooperative educational and cultural events.
