December 16, 2010 - U.S. Funds Community-Based Construction, Agriculture, and Democracy Projects (PDF 46K)
United States Ambassador Michael S. Owen today signed grant agreements totaling more than USD 135,000 with 14 community organizations. Six of these grants will finance the construction of classrooms, school furniture, bridges, wells, and drying floors through the Ambassador’s Special Self-Help (SSH) Program, which supports small, community-based projects.

November 15, 2010 - U.S. Supports Elimination of Excess Weapons and Munitions(PDF 72k)
United States Ambassador Michael S. Owen and the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Rtd. Major A.P. Conteh, today viewed the final demolition exercise of a U.S.-funded program at Benguema Base to destroy weapons and munitions left over from Sierra Leone’s civil war.

October 28, 2010 - U.S. Africa Command Visits Sierra Leone, Reinforces Partnership (PDF 72K)
Two senior representatives of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) visited Sierra Leone from October 27-29 to inspect partnership programs and review AFRICOM’s successful cooperation with the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF).

October 19, 2010 - U.S. Naval Forces Band Europe visits Sierra Leone (PDF 72K)
“Five-Star Brass,” a member of the U.S. Naval Forces Europe Band, visited Sierra Leone from October 9-14 to forge cross-cultural connections through music by entertaining, educating and interacting with Sierra Leoneans from all walks of life.

July 12, 2010 - United States Government Announces Changes to Consular Services Fees (PDF 106K)
The United States Government wishes to inform applicants that effective July 13, 2010, fees for various consular services will change. The new fees will cover actual operating expenses for the U.S. Government’s network of 301 consular posts abroad, 23 domestic passport agencies, and other centers that provide consular services to both U.S and foreign citizens.

August 24, 2010 - United States Embassy Starts Tree Planting (PDF 210K)
As part of a continuing initiative to reforest the land surrounding the embassy compound, the U.S. Embassy community gathered on July 15 for a tree planting ceremony. Both locally engaged staff and American employees donated the funds needed to pay for a variety of trees, including palm, citrus, cashew, and ornamental trees. Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Agriculture also generously donated a large number of acacia trees to the effort.

January 26th, 2010 - Opening of American Corner, Kissy (PDF 62K)
Ambassador Martin Cheshes, of the U.S. Embassy, on Tuesday, January 26 opened the brand new American Corner in the Kissy Public Library. The Ambassador inaugurated the Corner, which has been stocked with computers with internet, books, magazines, newspapers and other materials, all available for the people of Kissy.

May 10th, 2010 - United States Embassy on the Resignation of ACC Commissioner Abdul Tejan-Cole (PDF 59K)
The United States Embassy expresses its regret at the resignation of Mr. Abdul Tejan-Cole as the head of Sierra Leone’s Anti-Corruption Commission. Mr. Tejan-Cole’s efforts at combating corruption in the country were truly exceptional, and we wish to congratulate him for his outstanding contributions to the wellbeing of Sierra Leone.

May 10th, 2010 - U.S. Embassy Launches New Online Visa Application Form (PDF 45K)
The U.S. Embassy is now using a new online form called the DS-160 for Nonimmigrant Visa (NIV) applications. NIVs are visas used to enter the U.S. temporarily, including visits for business, pleasure, study, and official diplomatic work. Effective immediately, all NIV applicants except fiancée visa (K-1) applicants must use the DS-160.

May 26th, 2010 - Application Fees for U.S. Non-Immigrant Visas to Increase on June 4 (PDF 88K)
The U.S. Embassy in Freetown wishes to inform applicants that, effective June 4, 2010, the application fee for U.S. non-immigrant visas will increase. The total new MRV fee for H, L, O, P, Q, and R visas will be $150. For E visas $390, and K visas $350. All other categories, including B-1/B-2, F, J, will increase to $140.
